Bryn Athyn, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team picked up a 6-2 win over Alvernia in Saturday night conference action.
Travis McCurdy led the Lions with a hat-trick. Terrence Johnson recorded two goals, while Danny Triesler notched two assists.
At 16:51 in the first, Graham Lermitte made a glove save on a breakaway to keep the Crusaders off the board. Two minutes later, Jordan Roth and Ray Norfo found Travis McCurdy in the slot to take a 1-0 lead. At 5:41, Cade Gurney passed to Billy Martin from the corner and Martin took a shot on goal. Dave DalCortivo picked up the rebound to score a power play goal, giving Bryn Athyn a 2-0 lead. With :01 left in the period, Travis McCurdy won the face off and scored an unassisted, short-handed goal to lift the Lions 3-0 over the Crusaders going into the break.
At 13:26 in the second period, Triesler took a shot from the left wing that trickled through the goalie's pads. As the puck lost momentum, Johnson picked it up behind the goalie and pushed it across the line, giving the Lions a commanding 4-0 lead. Alvernia answered at 9:18, chipping away at Bryn Athyn's lead. With an Alvernia player in the box for a check from behind, the Lions picked up their fifth goal of the evening at 7:37 when Lermitte cleared the puck to Blake McCurdy in the neutral zone and Blake found his brother Travis McCurdy on a cross-ice pass. Travis took the puck up the right wing and scored top shelf to give the Lions a 5-1 lead.
During the final period of play, Triesler and Scott Witmyer connected with Johnson who deked the goalie, was tripped in the process, and found the back of the net with a diving shot. One minute later, Alvernia scored again to make the score 6-2. With 9:29 left in regulation, Alvernia looked to keep their hopes alive on a breakaway, but Martin lifted the stick of the Crusader player at the last second, forcing the Alvernia player to shoot wide. Momentum switched back and forth for the remainder of the game, and the Lions kept the Crusaders off the board to defeat them 6-2.
Lermitte recorded 45 saves between the pipes for the Lions.
Prior to the game, the Lions honored six seniors, Blake McCurdy, Danny Triesler, Drew Collins, Matthew Bartalini, Nick Tate, and Dustin Synnestvedt for their years of dedication and support to the men's ice hockey program.
Bryn Athyn heads on the road to face Richard Stockton on Wednesday, February 5th. The game is slated for 8:40pm.
