Bryn Athyn, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team fell 6-4 to Pitt-Johnstown in Saturday night action.
Danny Triesler led the Lions with a goal and two assists. Scott Witmyer notched three assists, while Travis McCurdy recorded one goal and one assist. DJ Mulhern and Cade Gurney each picked up a goal, and Blake McCurdy and Jordan Roth both added an assist.
The Lions got on the board first at the 14:18 mark in the first period when Blake McCurdy passed to Travis McCurdy who took a shot, and Gurney picked up the rebound from the left post. Less than a minute later, Mulhern found the back of the net off a pass from Witmyer and Triesler to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. At 9:49, Witmyer and Roth found Triesler in the slot for a power play goal. 30 seconds later, UPJ scored to chip away at the Lions' lead. At 4:33, the Wildcats scored to bring the game within one. Two diving saves from Graham Lermitte at the 2:35 and 1:12 marks kept a 3-2 lead for the Lions going into the first break.
At the 15:08 mark in the second, Travis McCurdy laid out and blocked a UPJ shot during a penalty kill to rob the Wildcats of a goal. With a Bryn Athyn player in the box for tripping, the Wildcats scored at 11:06 to tie the game at 3-3. With :38 left in the period, Lermitte made a glove save on a Pitt-Johnstown breakaway to keep the game tied at 3-3.
The Wildcats came out hot in the third, scoring at 17:57 to take a 4-3 lead. The Lions answered three minutes later with a power play goal from Travis McCurdy, assisted by Triesler and Witmyer. At 10:55, Lermitte made four consecutive saves during a scramble in front of the net to keep the game tied at 4-4. The Wildcats scored at the 5:38 mark to take a 5-4 lead. With less than a minute left in regulation, the Lions pulled their goalie during a power play to take a two man advantage, but it wasn't enough as a defensive zone clear from UPJ found the back of the net with :01 left in the game.
Lermitte recorded 51 saves between the pipes for the Lions.
Bryn Athyn returns to the ice tomorrow to face Richard Stockton in the consolation game at 1:00pm.
