Bryn Athyn, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn College ice hockey team topped East Stroudsburg 5-4 in a thrilling overtime victory during Friday night action.
Scott Witmyer led the Lions with two goals and an assist. Terrence Johnson notched two assists, while Sean Feyler picked up a goal and an assist.
During the first period of play, East Stroudsburg took an early lead, scoring at the 8:58 mark. Bryn Athyn answered five minutes later when Blake McCurdy found Cade Gurney in the slot to tie the game at 1-1.
With a Bryn Athyn player in the box for interference, the Warriors took a 2-1 lead at the 12:47 mark in the second period. The Lions answered a minute later when Feyler and Johnson found Witmyer who deked the goalie to tie the game at 2-2. At 8:12 Dave DalCortivo and Ray Norfo found Travis McCurdy on the left side for the go ahead goal. East Stroudsburg scored two minutes later to deadlock the score at 3-3.
During the final period of play, the Warriors scored at the 7:58 mark to take a 4-3 lead. With 3:34 left in the game, Witmyer passed to Jayson Marbach who took a shot on goal. Feyler picked up the rebound on the left side to tie the game at 4-4 and send the game into overtime.
Witmyer expressed, "We ran into a hot goalie and we became frustrated but in the end good teams find a way to prevail when adversity knocks on the door.it was a great team win and we couldn't have done it without support from our community and our fan support. In the end its a big win and its time to look forward to tommorow and put this behind us."
Coach Burke added, "Tonight was special night for our team the college and the community. On behalf of our team I want to say thank you for everyone that made tonight possible! Overall, as a team we played well at some points of the game. we fell behind and had too battle our way back as a team. We are lucky to get the win tonight but our boys know we have to come with more intensity tomorrow night."
