Sewell, NJ – The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team fell to Rowan University in shoot outs during Saturday afternoon non conference action.
Rowan got on the board first during a Bryn Athyn penalty kill, with a goal from the left side of the slot that was poked over the Lions goalie. Bryn Athyn attacked the offensive zone until Ray Norfo found the back of the net. From the left side of the offensive zone, Nofo's shot was deflected in off a Rowan player to tie the game at 1-1. The Profs tried to take the lead before the end of the period, but two solid saves by Bryn Athyn's goalie, Steve Altman, kept the game tied going into the second period.
Bryn Athyn got on the board quick in the second period with a short handed goal scored by Billy Martin. Andrew Dexter pressured the goalie, while trying to clear the defensive zone. Martin picked up the loose puck and scored from the right side of the offensive zone to put the Lions up 2-1. One minute later, the Profs scored from the top of the point to tie the game at 2-2. Bryn Athyn answered with a quick goal at 18:14 scored by Terrence Johnson, off a pass from Scott Witymer to lift the Lions 3-2.
With 6:55 left in the second, Rowan tied the game again, at 3-3, after scoring off a loose puck in front of the Bryn Athyn goal. At the 4:45 mark Johnson intercepted a loose puck from the blue line, on a Rowan pass. He passed it to Witmyer, who took a quick shot on net, and with the puck loose in the crease, Johnson crashed the net to score. Rowan answered with 3:00 left in the second to tie the game at 4-4 going into the second break.
During the final period of play, at 14:38 Travis McCurdy sent a leading pass to Johnson, who found Witmeyer on the left wing for the go ahead goal. Two minutes later, Rowan scored, tying the game at 5-5. At the 4:11 mark, the Profs scored, taking a 6-5 lead. With one minute left in the game, Sean Feyler and Witmeyer connected with Johnson who crashed the net to tie it at 6-6 and send the game into overtime.
The game remained tied after five minutes of overtime play, sending the game into a shoot out.
The goalies for both teams held strong, saving the first three shots. Rowan picked up a goal during their fourth chance. Johnson answered, by scoring to tie shootouts. Rowan scored again to take an one goal lead. The Lions fell short, as the Profs' goalie saved the final shot.
Bryn Athyn returns to the ice to face SUNY Maritime. The game is slated for 8:30pm.
