Johnstown, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team fell in non-conference action to Pitts-Johnstown 12-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Terrence Johnson led the Lions with a hat-trick and one assist. Travis McCurdy had one goal and an assist. Scott Witmyer notched four assists and David Dalcartivo added three assists.
Pitts-Johnstown got on the board three minutes into the game from a breakaway goal. After fending on multiple breakaway attacks, Travis McCurdy scored off a breakaway pass from Ray Norfo with 5:20 left in the first period to tie the game at 1-1. UPJ scored a power-play goal off a rebound to retake the lead with 1:20 left in the period. 20 seconds later, the Wildcats scored another goal to take a 3-1 lead into the first break.
Five minutes into the second period, UPJ scored a power-play goal to take a 4-1 lead. Bryn Athyn answered 10 seconds later, when Witmyer found Terrence at the top of the slot to score and bring the game within two. On a Lion penalty kill with 12:23 left in the period, UPJ scored to extend their lead. The Wildcats would score two more goals, to take a 7-2 lead before the Lions would put one in the back of the net. Sean Feyler scored off pass from Billy Martin and Witmyer with 3:20 left in the period. UPJ answered with a goal a minute later to extend their lead to 8-3 going into the second break.
At the 15:54 mark, Pitts-Johnstown scored to start the third period. Johnson scored two goals, on a Lion power-play at the 13:01 and at 12:34 to help chip away at the Wildcat lead. After the Wildcats fought off a 5-3 power-play, McCurdy scored, assisted by Johnson and Witmyer to bring the game within three, 9-6. Pitts-Johnstown replied with three goals at the end of the third period to secure their win.
Steven Altman made 10 saves in the first period. Kyle Watters made 27 saves in periods two and three.
Bryn Athyn heads on the road to face Rowan in a non-conference game on Oct 26th. The game is slated for 5:30 pm at Hollydell Ice Arena (Sewell, NJ.).
