BRYN ATHYN, Pa. -- Cameron Leech scored a career-high five goals for the Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse team, but the Lions' fourth-quarter rally came up short in a 12-9 non-conference loss to King's (Pa.) College Saturday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
The Lions (1-5) went into the final quarter trailing 11-5. Jon Carr started the rally with the second of his two goals with just over a minute gone by in the quarter. At the 8:58 mark, Leech scored his fourth goal of the of the afternoon to draw the Lions within 11-7.
Andrew Coyle kept the Bryn Athyn momentum going as he scored 90 seconds after Leech to make it a three-goal deficit. Leech completed his five-goal afternoon with an unassisted goal with 3:34 remaining to trim the gap to 11-9.
The Monarchs' Brock Johnson sealed the win for visiting King's (3-4) as he capped his six-point day with his fourth goal with 1:35 left.
The opening quarter saw the two teams go back-and-forth trading goals that resulted in King's leading 3-2 after 15 minutes of play. The Monarchs ended the swapping of goals as they tallied the first three goals of the second quarter to open up a 6-2 lead with 7:24 left in the half. Leech scored back-to-back goals to cut the Lion deficit to 6-4. King's took a 7-4 lead into the halftime break thanks to an Omar Nijmeh goal with 2:18 left in the half.
King's extended the gap to a match-high six goals by scoring three straight goals in the third quarter to make to a 10-4 contest. Carr, who finished with four points, and Brian Steiger swapped goals in the final 5:19.
Nolan Frame added a goal and an assist for the Lions.
Brett O'Neill and Nijmeh ended up with two goals and one assist, while Shawn Dickey and Steiger added two goals.
Matt Basile had eight saves for King's, while Brad DePasquale posted six saves in the Bryn Athyn crease. The Monarchs outshot the Lions 31-25.
Bryn Athyn begins North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a home contest against SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m.
