Bryn Athyn, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team defeated Widener 8-3 in Friday night conference action.
Five power play goals, as well as hat-tricks from both Terrence Johnson and David DalCortivo led the Lions to victory. Johnson additionally notched four assists, while DalCortivo recorded three. Bryn Athyn also benefitted from multiple-point nights from Danny Triesler and Benjamin Silvers. Triesler added a goal and two assists, while Silvers tallied three assists.
First period play opened up with a Widener goal at the 9:52 mark. One minute later, defensemen Patrick Huber blocked a shot, robbing the Pride of a goal. Bryn Athyn tied it up at 5:06 when Triesler deflected the puck in off tic-toe-passing from Silvers and Johnson. With a Bryn Athyn player in the box for interference, Widener reclaimed the lead at the 2:57 mark. The Lions answered at 1:34 when DalCortivo got a shot off and the puck trickled in off the goalie's pads. Jordan Roth picked up the assist. With 14 seconds left in the period, DalCartivo passed the puck along the boards to Johnson for the wrap around goal, with Silvers picking up the second assist.
Three and a half minutes into the second, Johnson finished off tic-toe-passing from DalCortivo and Patrick Linehan, giving the Lions a two goal advantage. At the 10:22 mark, Triesler and Johnson found DalCortivo for a top left shelf goal, giving Bryn Athyn a 5-2 lead. Widener scored two minutes later to chip away at the Lions' lead.
During the final period, Bryn Athyn went on a three goal scoring spree. At the 11:28 mark, DalCortivo picked up a hat-trick, scoring top right shelf off a backdoor pass from Triesler and Johnson. Four minutes later DalCortivo and Silvers found Johnson, who picked up the second hat-trick of the night for the Lions. With 2:28 left in the period, Johnson dropped the puck to Ryan Pickard at the blue line. Pickard sent a cross-ice pass to Ray Norfo, who one-timed it in from the left post for the final goal of the game.
DalCartivo expressed, "Good team win tonight, felt good to get the three points. Started to listen to my coaches and goalies to start shooting the puck and did my job on the defensive end. Playoffs here we come!"
Graham Lermitte registered 21 saves in goal for the Lions.
Johnson added, "Good win tonight, we played well in the D zone and it got us into the semifinals of the conference championship. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us and we're looking forward to it."
Prior to their 8-3 victory, Bryn Athyn honored Senior Patrick Huber. Huber has played in 22 games so far this season, scoring two goals, and notching eight assists for the Lions for a total of 10 points. Professor Bryntesson expressed, "I have been so impressed with Pat over the years, both academically and as a person. Pat has been an ideal student who shows great interest in his academic program and courses, and I am impressed with his maturity as an individual. He is a very motivated person who strives for excellence in whatever he endeavors. He will graduate this spring majoring in business and psychology. I am so proud of his achievements. I will miss him and his contributions to Bryn Athyn College when he graduates."
The Lions head on the road Sunday, February 10th to face Richard Stockton for their final game of the regular season. The puck is set to drop at 2:45pm.
