BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Tanner Congdon recorded a goal and an assist and Isaac Syre stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced as the Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Aquinas with a 4-1 win Saturday afternoon in Junge Pavilion.
The Lions got off to a fast start by scoring twice in the opening 7:50 to take a quick 2-0 advantage. Nick Malvasi put the Lions on the board at the 5:35 mark with the first goal of the game. Connor Devereux assisted on the play. Just over two minutes later, Nikita Smirnov struck on the power play—one of six that Bryn Athyn had during the game—at 7:50 with assists from Congdon and Alex Tan to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the second period, Congdon put his name in the goal column as he scored an unassisted goal 4:53 into the frame for the Lions' third goal of the afternoon.
Anthony DePetres widen the gap to 4-0 with a goal from the right circle just 4:40 into the third period. Anthony Notorfrancesco and Jimmy Lockamyeir assisted on the play.
The Saints' Steven Gustafson broke up the shutout with just nine seconds left in the contest on the power play. Gustafson's goal was assisted on by Jason Wrebelis and Kyle Traux. The Saints ended up 1-for-5 on the power play.
Nick Ottenbacher finished the game with 31 saves in net for Aquinas. Both teams attempted 35 saves.
After completing a season-long seven-game home stand, the Lions will return to the road to take on No. 9 Utica on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in New York.
