BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team will square off with North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Penn State Abington for the second time in a week on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Asplundh Field House.
LAST TIME OUT
Bryn Athyn (7-8, 4-2 NEAC) "stole" a 74-72 overtime victory against SUNY Cobleskill on Jan. 14. The Lions trailed 72-69 when Larry Stevenson III knocked down a 3-pointer with just over four seconds left in the overtime period to know the score at 72. On the ensuing play, Rahim Washington stole the inbound pass and made a layup at the right block with 1.2 seconds left to give Bryn Athyn the victory.
Stevenson III led the Lion offense with 20 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Washington finished up with 19 points, six assists, and three rebounds. Jerome Staley and Christian Rivera both added 11 points.
Penn State Abington (5-8, 3-3 NEAC) outscored Wells in the second half 43-32 to pick up an 80-69 triumph on Sunday. Terrance Reese came off-the-bench to record a team-high 16 points. Jordan Lomax and Devin Hill added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
SERIES HISTORY
Penn State Abington took the series lead 5-4 after defeating Bryn Athyn 101-77 on Jan. 10 in Abington.
Washington led four Lions in double figures with a game-high 24 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Jerome Staley added 13 points and eight rebounds. Rivera had 12 points while Stevenson III recorded 11 points.
Hill was the Nittany Lions' top scorer with 16 points.
Penn State Abington shot 61.9 percent (39-of-63) from the floor, 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from 3-point range. Bryn Athyn connected on 40.3 percent (25-of-62) of its shots, 33.3 percent (12-of-36) on its 3-pointers. Penn State Abington owned a 47-24 rebounding advantage.
Bryn Athyn is 2-2 against Penn State Abington in Asplundh Field House. The Lions won their last two home games with the Nittany Lions—62-49 on Jan. 30, 2016 and 82-54 on Jan. 28, 2017.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Washington—the conference leader in minutes per game (36.6)—is one of the top offensive threats in the NEAC. The conference's second-best scoring with 19.5 points per game, Washington is first with 98 made baskets, third with 63 made free throws, and eighth with 34 made 3-pointers. Washington is also third with 31 steals and seventh with 50 assists.
During the month of January, Washington is putting up 24.3 points per game and shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
After posting a career-high 20 points in back-to-back games, Stevenson III raised his scoring average to 7.5 points per game. He has 23 steals to rank 13th in the NEAC. Stevenson III is averaging 14.5 points in the four games this month.
Lamarr Crenshaw—Bryn Athyn's second-leading scorer—did not play in the first game. He is 15th in the NEAC with 14.9 points per game and 11th in made baskets with 79. Crenshaw leads Bryn Athyn with 6.4 rebounds per game.
Christian Rivera has scored in double figures in each of the last three games to increase his average to 9.6 points per game. Rivera is fourth in the NEAC with 55 assists, 23 coming this month.
SCOUTING THE PENN STATE ABINGTON
Penn State Abington is still leading the conference in scoring with 83.7 points per game, made 3-pointers (10.2 per game), 3-point attempts (27.7 per game), made free throws (17.8 per game), and free throw percentage (74.1 percent). The Nittany Lions are second in rebounding (42.2 per game) and rebounding margin (+7.2), third in 3-point shooting (36.7 percent), and fourth in field goal shooting (43.6 percent).
The Nittany Lions are 11th in scoring defense (82.5 points per game) and ninth in opponent shooting percentage (44.0 percent).
Hill—who has scored in double figures in each of the last five games—is leading the team with 15.0 points per game, which is 12th in the NEAC. He is the top free throw shooter in the league at 90.5 percent.
Lomax is nearly averaging a double-double with 11.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He has four double-doubles this season, one coming against the Lions. Lomax is third in the conference in rebounding and sixth with 55 made free throws.
Quinn DeNofa has a team-high 43 assists and the fourth-best assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0.
Terrance Reese is adding 12.5 points per game.
