Philadelphia, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team defeated the University of Pennsylvania 9-5 in Friday night action.
Terrence Johnson and Travis McCurdy led the Lions with two goals and one assist each. Ray Norfo and Cade Gurney each recorded a goal and an assist. Dustin Synnestvedt, Patrick Huber, and Ray Weissler each recorded a goal, while Drew Collins, Blake McCurdy, and Benjamin Silvers each notched an assist.
The Lions got on the board first two minutes into the first period, off a back door goal from Weissler assisted by Norfo. At the 7:11 mark, Johnson passed the puck up the ice and connected with Norfo, who shot the puck top shelf, giving Bryn Athyn a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Lions scored again when Blake McCurdy passed the puck to Silvers, who took a shot from the blue line and connected with Travis McCurdy, who tipped the puck in for the goal. The University of Pennsylvania scored at the 1:36 mark, to chip away at Bryn Athyn's lead. The Lions answered 16 seconds later when Blake McCurdy and Gurney passed the puck through traffic and connected with Travis McCurdy who found the back of the net. With 44 seconds left in the period, the Quakers scored, cutting Bryn Athyn's lead to two.
During the second period of play, the Quakers scored at the 8:15 mark. At the 4:46 mark, Synnestvedt one timed it in, off a pass from Johnson and Travis McCurdy, giving the Lions a 5-3 lead going into the third.
In the third period, Huber found the back of the net at the 18:56 mark, off a pass from Collins. The Quakers scored two goals at the 14:53 and 10:40 marks to chip away at Bryn Athyn's lead. The Lions answered at the 5:49 mark when Johnson skated the puck up the ice on a breakaway to record an unassisted goal. Two minutes later, Roth passed the puck into the slot and found Gurney, who deked the goalie and found the back of the net, giving Bryn Athyn an 8-5 lead. With 1:47 left in the period, Johnson scored the final goal of the game unassisted.
Steven Altman recorded 16 saves in goal.
Johnson stated, "Tonight was a crucial win. It feels good to head into break with positive momentum. We hope to have a strong performance at our home opener on November 30th."
The Lions return to the ice Friday, November 30th to face Rutgers-Camden in their home opener. The puck is set to drop at 8:00pm.
