Bryn Athyn Athletics had a chance to catch up with a few members of our community to hear their perspective and experience with Black History Month.
Okoye Taylor | Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
"Black History Month to me is about acknowledging, honoring and celebrating all the great achievements by African Americans. And also all the things we will achieve. It's important to look at the progress this country has made but to understand that there's still work to do. It's been great to see such an emphasis on diversity and equality because that's the only way we're going to move forward as a country. I think it's as simple as treating people the way you would want to be treated. If people can adopt that mindset we're going to stay on the right track."
Terrae Lewis | Women's Basketball & Women's Cross Country Student-Athlete
"To me, Black History Month means a month where I can be comfortable in my skin and it's okay to be African American. A month where I can learn, celebrate, and praise black excellence throughout history. Having diversity, equity, and inclusion are important because the world is more than black and white. Everyone should be treated with fairness. Everyone should feel included in this world."
James Dyson | Men's Basketball & Men's Cross Country Student-Athlete
"I believe Black History Month is a time for us to be celebrated. It's a time where we acknowledge our leaders from the movement, along with shedding light on those who aren't as widely known. Not only is it about our past, but it's also a time to celebrate where we can go in the future. Personally, this month makes me think about Black excellence in the present. It pushes me to reflect on examples of it in my life, as well as ways I can embody it. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important in our efforts to continue moving forward. Once those are truly achieved, our people will live better lives."
