Bryn Athyn College is excited to introduce a new team to our athletics department. This year, Coach Dennis Hibbs rounded up his troops and created the school's first Men's Volleyball team. We asked Coach Hibbs a few questions about this season, and his responses did not disappoint.
At the end of this season, we asked Coach Hibbs what he was most looking forward to this season. Hibbs said he was most excited to "Build a culture within our program and bonding with this group of guys. Coming from a men's volleyball background myself and knowing how much I valued my own coaches as a player, I was looking forward to building that relationship with the guys." From the outside looking in, it seems like this group of men made Coach Hibbs's expectations come true.
We also asked Coach what his greatest ambition was to achieve as a new athletic program, aside from winning a championship. He shared that he wants his men "To grow as individuals. Volleyball is a unique sport that helps foster life skills that can be used in the future. Communication, teamwork, stress management, and overcoming obstacles are all skills that the guys need to master on the court as well as in the real world. I hope our program's culture will help prepare this roster to impact their community in the best way possible as they move forward in their lives, beyond volleyball and BAC." With this mindset, there is no question that he will assist his team in growing closer and closer to the big CSAC title.
Like any team, the Coach has set some goals for his men. He shares that "Our biggest goal is to increase our "volleyball I.Q." We have different levels of experience on this roster. Getting everyone up to speed and learning the game well so we can compete at the highest level in our conference has been the main focus." When asked about his satisfaction level after the end of the season, he shared, "This group has blown me away with how fast they've picked up the game as well as their desire to continue to learn more and improve every practice and game. Looking back and comparing our skillset from the beginning of the season to where we are now, it's undeniable that we have progressed. We are competing every single set."
Junior, Nate Butler, is an integral part of this men's volleyball team. When asked about his experience, he was happy to share a short quote that encapsulates what this season meant to him. Butler shares that "The journey is not the end, when you fail, it's when giving up on yourself, you've truthfully failed. So, fail better." With this positive and realistic view of the season, Nate has put his heart into this season. Not only for himself but for his Coach and his new built-in brothers.
With this new program, the Lion pride continues to grow. We are more than happy to have this team with us, and we cannot wait to see what next season has in store for Coach Hibbs and his team!
