BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - On July 1, 2021, former head athletic trainer, Sal Capone, transitioned into a new position as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Strength and Conditioning. The move was officially announced on Thursday morning July 22, by Director of Athletics Dr. Suzanne Nelson.
Capone said, "I would like to thank President Blair and Director of Athletics Dr. Suzanne Nelson for this opportunity to start a new program for the student athletes at Bryn Athyn College."
Capone came to Bryn Athyn after working in sports medicine at numerous local universities including Neumann and St. Joseph's. He has spent the last three years working along side Scott Jones in Health and Wellness as the Head Athletic Trainer for Bryn Athyn Athletics. Capone was in charge of providing care for 13 sports. Scott Jones on Sal's impact in Sports Medicine and his transition to Strength and Conditioning, "Sal has led the sports medicine department over the last few years has always been an exemplary leader and excellent clinician, as he transitions to focus on strength and conditioning services, I am confident he will advance the programing to new heights."
Capone shared, "The Director of Strength and Conditioning role will allow me to utilize my experiences as a sports performance specialist and strength coach. I am eager to provide the student athletes a positive training environment and a successful 21-22 athletic season."
Recognizing the importance of strength and conditioning to the success, Capone began to build out programming for many athletic teams to help assist them in return to play. Dr. Nelson echoed the importance of building out programming and having Capone lead the build of the strength and conditioning, "Unlike any class or athletic venue, educating student athletes about sports-specific training in the fitness center teaches them how to maximize their physical potential along with building confidence to pursue whatever they desire during their athletic, academic, and professional careers," Nelson continued. "There is no better individual to facilitate this growth and learning process than a qualified strength and conditioning professional. I'm thrilled to have Sal step into this role along with his other responsibilities as Assistant Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for our club hockey program."
Capone has been a part of the Bryn Athyn Athletic Program since 2018 where he served as Head Athletic Trainer and Strength Coach. Capone is a graduate of West Chester University and California University of PA, where he earned a BS of Athletic Training and a Masters of Sports Management respectively. He is a NATABOC certified Athletic Trainer, NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and USA Hockey Coach.
