BRYN ATHYN, Pa. -- The Bryn Athyn College field hockey team, along with the other six field hockey teams in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), will be participating in a 100-Mile Challenge initiated by the Atlantic East Conference during the month of October.
Throughout October, every individual on the seven field hockey teams in the CSAC will attempt to complete 100 miles, whether walking or running, to raise awareness and support for breast cancer education.
Alexis Howerin, a senior on the Wesley College field hockey team, was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in early 2020 after finding a lump from self-examination. After numerous doctor visits, tests, and consultations, the decision was made for Howerin to undergo a double mastectomy. Check out Part One of Alexis Howerin's Road to Recovery.
"The Bryn Athyn field hockey team is extremely excited and humbled to take part in the #LexStrong initiative with our fellow CSAC members," said Bryn Athyn College field hockey head coach Katie Fitzgerald. "We will be showing our solidarity and support by participating in a breast cancer awareness cycling ride with our team.
"We look forward to completing this not only as a team, but also with so many others supporting this amazing initiative."
The Atlantic East initiated this challenge to its conference membership to create awareness about breast cancer amongst the college-age generation through the #LexStrong initiative and since then, several other Division III conferences have accepted this challenge as well as a show of support for this courageous young woman.
The Atlantic East will be compiling a list of all participants who support this initiative at the end of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Donations from the CSAC community to raise awareness for this cause are also welcome.
